The Foresight Institute of Research and Translation (FIRAT Rwanda) is proud to announce the publication of a landmark article in Discover Medicine (Springer Nature), entitled:
“Rationale, Principles and Global Health Implications of Establishing Public Health Pharmacology as a Distinct Discipline”

This achievement was spearheaded by the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) of FIRAT Rwanda, under the leadership of Professor Ahmed Adebowale Adedeji, in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Rwanda, Nigerian institutions, and diaspora partners.
Why Public Health Pharmacology (PHP) Matters
The time is now to advance the practice space. Public Health Pharmacology (PHP) represents a new frontier in global health, bridging the gap between pharmacology and population health, with tools to better manage medicines, vaccines, and health interventions at the community level. It also addresses critical real-world challenges such as:
- Monitoring vaccine safety and efficacy at community level.
- Safeguarding drug integrity through smarter cold chain systems.
- Combating antimicrobial resistance (AMR).
- Optimizing medication access and resilience in public health emergencies.
- Extending applications to non-communicable diseases and community-level interventions.
What’s Next: Phase 2 Implementation
With this publication, FIRAT Rwanda and its partners are now moving to Phase 2: Implementation. This stage will involve:
- Finalizing the curriculum for a Master’s Program in Public Health Pharmacology.
- Piloting the program in select African universities, including the University of Rwanda.
- Establishing an Implementation Committee to define strategies and mobilize resources.
- Building capacity for Africa to lead in pharmacology-based public health innovations.
Quote from Leadership:
“FIRAT Rwanda is proud to have initiated and coordinated this groundbreaking work. Public Health Pharmacology will equip Africa and the world with tools to better manage medicines, vaccines, and health interventions at the community level. This milestone reflects FIRAT’s mission to advance research, innovation, and translation into real-world solutions.” – Kudirat Adedeji, MD, FIRAT Rwanda
