Europe's Latest Weather Satellite Reaches Orbit, Closing the MTG Trio on Ariane 6's First Geostationary Mission

The second Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite is now in geostationary transfer orbit after a successful Ariane 6 launch from Kourou. With its siblings already on station, MTG-I2 completes Europe's first MTG trio — promising 50 times more data than the previous generation for forecasters across Europe and Africa.

Kourou, French Guiana – August 27, 2026

The second Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite lifted off aboard an Ariane 6 rocket from Europe's Spaceport in French Guiana at 22:11 CEST on 27 August 2026, completing the first family of MTG weather satellites and giving Europe and Africa the most detailed geostationary weather coverage ever operated.

The flight, designated VA270, marked the ninth launch of Europe's heavy-lift Ariane 6 and the first mission to a geostationary transfer orbit for the rocket — the farthest Ariane 6 has flown so far. Arianespace operated the launch service; ESA managed the Ariane 6 development programme.

The trio is complete

MTG-I2 joins MTG-I1, launched in December 2022, and the MTG Sounder satellite MTG-S1, launched in 2024. Together, the three satellites complete the imaging and sounding core of Europe's next-generation weather system. EUMETSAT, which operates the Meteosat programme on behalf of 30 member and cooperating states, will take over MTG-I2 once it reaches geostationary orbit and completes commissioning.

What changes for forecasts

When fully operational, MTG-I2 is expected to produce at least 50 times more data than the previous Meteosat Second Generation (MSG) satellites. The imager can scan its full Earth disc in 10 minutes and revisit Europe and northern Africa every 2.5 minutes — a step change in temporal resolution that will improve nowcasting of thunderstorms, fog and rapidly developing convection.

For Africa, where weather data has historically been sparser, MTG's frequent revisits will feed directly into national meteorological services' early warning systems for storms, flooding and heatwaves. EUMETSAT distributes data free of charge to all African National Meteorological and Hydrological Services through its cooperation agreements with the African Union and the World Meteorological Organization.

A milestone for Ariane 6

The mission extended Ariane 6's commercial track record with the rocket's first geostationary transfer orbit injection. For this launch, Ariane 6 flew in a configuration with two P120C-based solid-propellant rocket motors. Geostationary transfer orbits demand the highest energy of any routinely flown mission profile, making the flight a critical qualification step for the rocket's full range of services.

Inside the satellite

MTG-I2 carries the Flexible Combined Imager, which captures imagery in 16 spectral channels spanning visible, near-infrared and infrared wavelengths. It also carries a Lightning Imager for continuous detection of in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning across the visible disc — a capability now considered essential for severe-storm forecasting.

Built by Thales Alenia Space as prime contractor, with OHB responsible for the satellite platform, MTG-I2 passed its thermal vacuum testing in late 2025 before embarking on its launch campaign in 2026.

The road ahead

The next phase for EUMETSAT is the MTG-Sounder satellite's full operational use, the integration of MTG-I2 into the operational constellation, and the eventual definition of a post-MTG follow-on system. But for the next decade, the three-satellite MTG family — now complete — will be the backbone of European and African geostationary weather observation.
