Why a New TB Vaccine Matters
Tuberculosis remains the world's leading infectious disease killer, claiming approximately 1.25 million lives annually according to WHO estimates. Unlike the BCG vaccine, which is derived from Mycobacterium bovis (a cattle-adapted strain), MTBVAC is based on the human pathogen itself — with specific virulence genes deleted to render it safe while preserving immunogenic properties.
This design rationale offers a potential advantage: by using the human TB bacillus as its backbone, MTBVAC may present a broader array of antigens to the immune system than BCG, potentially eliciting a more relevant and protective immune response against M. tuberculosis infection.
