The New York City Health Department today honored the World Trade Center Health Registry (WTC Health Registry) on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks. The Registry, the nation’s largest post‑disaster health study with over 71,000 enrollees, continues to monitor long‑term physical and mental health outcomes for responders, residents, and students exposed to the disaster.
Why the Registry Matters
Established in 2002, the Registry was created to answer a simple question: What are the lasting health effects of 9/11? By collecting periodic health surveys, linking to medical records, and publishing peer‑reviewed findings, the Registry has shaped treatment protocols, disaster‑response planning, and insurance coverage for thousands of New Yorkers.
Program Reach and Impact
- 71,000+ enrollees across New York City, the Pentagon, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
- Five survey waves (2003‑2021) covering respiratory, gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, and mental‑health outcomes.
- Over 200 peer‑reviewed publications cited by WHO, CDC, and major medical journals.

Looking Ahead
The Registry’s next phase will focus on late‑emerging conditions such as cognitive impairment and rare cancers, while expanding outreach to younger survivors and their families. Funding through the James Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act secures the program through 2090.
