South Africa Invests R292 Million in New Supercomputer to Replace Lengau

South Africa has announced a R292 million investment in a new supercomputer to replace the Lengau system, which has served as the backbone of African high-performance computing (HPC) since 2016. The new system, expected to be operational in phases between November 2026 and March 2027, will deliver four petaflops of computing power — nearly 300% more powerful than its predecessor.

The Legacy of Lengau

Lengau, meaning "Cheetah" in Setswana, was once the fastest supercomputer on the continent. Hosted at the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) under the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), it supported diverse fields including:

  • Weather and seismic modelling
  • Drug discovery and genomics
  • Astronomy projects like the Square Kilometre Array and MeerKAT
  • Artificial intelligence research

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Lengau played a crucial role in genomic sequencing of SARS-CoV-2, highlighting its importance in public health. However, with a peak performance of 1.3 petaflops, it had become outdated compared to global HPC standards.

A Leap Forward

The new system will enhance scientific competitiveness, support climate modelling and energy research, expand bioinformatics and AI applications, and provide continuity for researchers during the phased transition.

Cybersecurity Concerns

The announcement comes on the heels of a cybersecurity breach in May 2026, when Lengau was hacked and exploited for cryptocurrency mining. The attack caused downtime and raised concerns about the resilience of South Africa's digital infrastructure.

Minister Blade Nzimande confirmed that a "remediation and resilience programme" has been implemented, including stronger access controls, improved network segmentation, and enhanced monitoring of abnormal workloads. He also admitted that the country's national high-performance computing infrastructure is squeezed, with cybersecurity funds under pressure.

Budgetary Pressures

While R292 million has been ring-fenced for the National Integrated Cyberinfrastructure System (NICIS), Treasury budget cuts and rising operational costs have placed the programme under strain. Experts warn that sustaining operations and expansion targets may be difficult without additional funding.

Strategic Importance

The investment is about more than raw computing power — it is about positioning South Africa as a leader in African science and innovation. The new HPC system will reduce reliance on legacy infrastructure, enable cross-border research collaborations, and strengthen South Africa's role in global scientific networks.

Risks and Challenges

Despite the optimism, challenges remain. Cybercrime is rising across Africa, with financial losses doubling since 2024. Underfunded cybersecurity units and outdated systems leave vulnerabilities, and operational continuity during phased deployment must be carefully managed.

South Africa's new supercomputer represents a critical investment in the future of science, technology, and innovation — promising to transform research capacity across disciplines, from climate science to genomics.
