Cybersecurity Fundamentals for African Professionals

Course Overview

A practical, non-technical mini-course designed for African professionals, entrepreneurs, small business owners, and organizational staff who need to protect themselves, their teams, and their organizations from the fastest-growing cyber threats on the continent. No coding or IT experience required. Drawing on the latest threat intelligence from INTERPOL, GSMA, and Africa-specific cybersecurity reports, this course equips learners with immediately actionable defenses against phishing, mobile money fraud, social engineering, ransomware, and identity-based attacks. Learners will move from understanding the threat landscape to implementing practical security controls — including password hygiene, multi-factor authentication, device security, and incident response planning — all contextualized for the realities of doing business across Africa. Africa is experiencing a cybercrime crisis. According to INTERPOL's 2025 Africa Cyberthreat Assessment, online scams account for 34% of all cyber incidents detected across the continent. Between 2024 and 2025, reported cybercrime-related losses in Africa more than doubled, rising from USD 192 million to USD 484 million. Mobile money fraud — including SIM swap scams and telecom impersonation — is now reported by 97% of African countries surveyed. Yet most organizations and individuals remain unprotected, not because the solutions are complex, but because awareness and practical know-how are lacking. This course addresses that gap head-on.
