This module builds a strong conceptual foundation for the entire cold chain system. Learners begin by exploring the science of vaccine thermostability — why different vaccines have different sensitivities to heat and cold — and the concept of the 'cold chain' as a continuous temperature-controlled supply chain from manufacturer to child. They then move into the hardware: the types of refrigerators, cold boxes, vaccine carriers, and ice packs used across African health facilities, including solar-direct-drive (SDD) units common in off-grid settings. Finally, the module covers the full range of temperature monitoring tools — from simple dial thermometers to electronic data loggers, Fridge Tags, and the all-important Vaccine Vial Monitor (VVM) — teaching learners how to read, interpret, and respond to each device.
