The National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) announced on 6 March 2025 that Antarctic sea ice likely reached its annual minimum extent on 1 March 2025, measuring 1.98 million square kilometres (764,000 square miles). This ties 2025 with 2022 and 2024 for the second-lowest Antarctic sea ice minimum in the 47-year satellite record, which began in 1979. Only the 2023 minimum — at 1.79 million square kilometres (691,000 square miles) — was lower.

The 2025 minimum is 860,000 square kilometres (332,000 square miles) below the 1981–2010 average Antarctic minimum extent of 2.84 million square kilometres (1.10 million square miles). It also marks the fourth consecutive year that the Antarctic sea ice minimum has fallen below 2.0 million square kilometres (772,000 square miles), a threshold that was rarely breached prior to 2022.

A Pattern of Persistent Lows

The four minimums set in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 are the four lowest in the entire satellite record. Five of the lowest Antarctic sea ice extents have occurred since 2017. This sustained period of low ice cover stands in stark contrast to the historical behaviour of Antarctic sea ice, which was characterised by high year-to-year variability with no clear long-term trend — and even showed slight increases — for decades following the start of satellite observations in 1979.

Conditions in Context

On 1 March 2025, nearly all of the remaining high-concentration sea ice was located in the Weddell Sea. Sea ice was also present in the Amundsen and Ross Seas, but in low concentration. Isolated patches persisted along the coasts of Enderby Land and Wilkes Land. The Antarctic minimum extent was reached five days later than the 1981–2010 median date of 24 February, making it one of the latest dates on record for the Antarctic minimum.

The NSIDC analysis noted that Antarctic sea ice has been historically variable, wavering between highs and lows from year to year. The period from 2013 to 2015, for example, saw near-record high minimum extents. The recent series of low years, however, has led researchers to question whether this decline represents a significant shift in the Antarctic climate system.

Investigating a Regime Shift

The recurring, persistently low sea ice levels observed from 2022 through 2025 have led many researchers to suggest that the Antarctic sea ice system may have undergone a "regime shift" — a fundamental change in the region's climate dynamics. Several factors are thought to contribute to this shift:

  • Increased ocean heat: Researchers have identified increased ocean heat at depths of 100–200 metres as a key driver. Warmer subsurface waters can melt sea ice from below, even when atmospheric conditions would otherwise favour ice growth.
  • Atmospheric pressure anomalies: Regional atmospheric pressure patterns, including changes in the Amundsen Sea Low, have altered wind patterns that affect sea ice formation, transport, and melt.
  • Interaction with ice shelves: Reduced sea ice extent exposes floating ice shelves to more ocean swell, potentially accelerating ice shelf thinning and grounding line retreat.

Contrasting Arctic and Antarctic Trends

The Antarctic sea ice situation differs markedly from the Arctic, where sea ice has been declining steadily and significantly for decades. Arctic sea ice extent for January 2025 was the joint lowest on record, continuing a well-documented downward trend of approximately 12–13% per decade since 1979. The Arctic minimum in September 2024 was also among the lowest on record.

The Antarctic's historical stability — and even slight expansion in some periods — had been cited by some as evidence that climate change was not uniformly affecting polar regions. The recent string of low years has challenged this narrative and highlighted the complexity of the Antarctic climate system, where the interactions between atmosphere, ocean, and cryosphere are less well understood than in the Arctic.

Why Antarctic Sea Ice Matters

Antarctic sea ice plays a critical role in the global climate system. It reflects sunlight back into space (the albedo effect), helps regulate the exchange of heat and gases between the ocean and atmosphere, and influences global ocean circulation through the formation of dense water masses. Sea ice also provides critical habitat for Antarctic wildlife, including krill, penguins, seals, and whales.

Reductions in sea ice extent can have cascading effects throughout the Southern Ocean ecosystem. Krill populations, which form the base of the Antarctic food web, depend on sea ice for winter habitat and feeding. Declines in krill abundance could affect everything from penguin colonies to whale populations.

Furthermore, the loss of sea ice around Antarctica's floating ice shelves reduces the "buttressing" effect that helps hold back the flow of land-based glaciers into the ocean. This could accelerate the contribution of Antarctic ice loss to global sea level rise, which is already one of the most consequential impacts of climate change.
