ARUA Launches Early-Career Research Fellowships for 42 African Scholars with Mastercard Foundation and Carnegie Support

Accra, Ghana · 28 January 2026

The African Research Universities Alliance (ARUA) hosted its inaugural regional workshop for the first cohort of Early Career Researchers (ECRs) from 28 to 30 January 2026 at the University of Ghana. The three-day workshop brought together 34 early-career researchers who are currently at different stages of their six-month fellowships, sponsored by either the Mastercard Foundation or the Carnegie Corporation of New York. The participants are drawn primarily from ARUA member universities and are attached to ARUA Centres of Excellence located across the alliance's 23 member institutions.

The workshop was officially opened by Professor Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana and Vice Chair of the ARUA Board. Supported by the Mastercard Foundation, the workshop sought to build core research competencies, strengthen proposal and grant-writing capabilities, enhance collaboration and networking among ARUA researchers, and foster career development strategies.

Fellowship Structure and Scope

Each fellowship lasts six months, between July 2025 and June 2026, with a maximum of four fellows assigned to each Centre of Excellence or Cluster of Research Excellence. All positions were to be filled by December 2025. The programme provides a monthly stipend of US$2,000, modest accommodation payment, and travel support including a return ticket to the host institution. Additional financial support is available for eligible women who may require adjustment assistance, such as childcare.

The 13 ARUA Centres of Excellence span both natural sciences and humanities, covering water, energy, non-communicable diseases, materials and nanotechnology, climate and development, sustainable food systems, post-conflict societies, good governance, inequality research, migration and mobility, notions of identity, unemployment and skills development, and urbanisation and habitable cities. The 21 Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence, established jointly with The Guild of European Research-Intensive Universities, extend across health and medicine, sustainability and food systems, technology and innovation, social sciences, and fundamental research including mathematics.

Building Research Competencies

The workshop programme featured sessions led by seasoned scholars drawn from ARUA Centres of Excellence and research-intensive institutions in Ghana. The practical and interactive format incorporated plenary discussions, group activities, case studies, self-learning activities, and a networking cocktail. A major highlight was a moderated panel discussion titled "Scaling the Heights in Academia and Research — Lessons for Early Career Researchers," featuring distinguished researchers — predominantly women — whose professional journeys were intended to inspire the fellows, the majority of whom are female.

Fellowship Requirements and Outputs

Each research fellow is expected to work with other researchers under the guidance of an assigned mentor, write and publish a minimum of one academic paper in a high-impact journal indexed in Scopus or Web of Science, deliver at least two presentations, participate in technical workshops, assist in creating new partnerships between the host Centre and other relevant bodies, and help disseminate research findings. The requirement that fellows must be available to spend six months away from their home university and return to their home institution ensures that the investment in capacity building directly benefits the sending institution.

Applicants must be African nationals who have a PhD in a discipline related to the thematic area of the Centre or Cluster, be within five years of completing their PhD, and be young faculty or research members at an ARUA university. The selection process is conducted by the Director or Co-lead of the relevant Centre or Cluster, in consultation with the host institution's Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

A Model for Continental Research Capacity

ARUA views the Early Career Research Fellowship as critical to consolidating the progress made by its Centres of Excellence. The programme aligns with the main visions of both the network and its supporting foundations. The Mastercard Foundation, one of the largest foundations in the world, works to advance education and financial inclusion to enable young people in Africa to access dignified and fulfilling work. The Carnegie Corporation of New York supports education, democracy, international peace and security, and higher education and research in Africa.

The initiative underscores ARUA's broader approach to research capacity building: pooling resources among peer African institutions to generate a critical mass that can more effectively support researchers, while leveraging external partnerships for additional resources. By placing early-career researchers in cross-border residential programmes at Centres of Excellence, ARUA is creating networks of scholars who can collaborate across institutional and national boundaries throughout their careers.
