August 2026 Sets New Record for Earth's Hottest Month

SEPTEMBER 10, 2026 — In a stark demonstration of how human activity is rewriting the planet's climate baseline, scientists confirmed Wednesday that August 2026 was Earth's hottest month ever recorded, surpassing the previous record set in July 2023.

The finding, released by the European climate service Copernicus, marks another milestone in an increasingly volatile global climate. Earth averaged 62.53 degrees Fahrenheit (16.96 degrees Celsius) in August, just one-hundredth of a degree Celsius above the previous record, though that difference falls within the measurement uncertainty range.

Samantha Burgess, strategic climate lead for Copernicus, said the data represents a fundamental shift in Earth's climate system.

"It is now time to stop acting surprised that our warming planet keeps getting warmer. This is occurring exactly as forecast by scientists literally decades ago," said Andrew Dessler, a climate scientist at Texas A&M University.

RECORD-BREAKING GLOBAL HEAT

On a global scale, August 2026 was 1.65 degrees Celsius (nearly 3 degrees Fahrenheit) above pre-industrial levels, significantly exceeding the 1.5 degrees Celsius threshold established by the 2015 Paris climate agreement. The eight hottest months on record have all occurred since July 2023, according to Copernicus data.

"Our climate system is really operating well outside the range we would have expected just a decade ago," Burgess said during a media briefing in the United Kingdom.

The extreme heat extended across multiple climate indicators. Global monthly ocean temperatures in August tied the March 2024 all-time record for the warmest month ever recorded. August 22 set a new record for the hottest day ever recorded in the world's seas, according to Copernicus measurements.

NORTH AMERICAN HEAT SURGE

The United States experienced particularly extreme conditions during August, with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announcing that the 2026 summer in the Lower 48 states was the hottest ever recorded, surpassing the Dust Bowl peak of 1936 by nearly four-tenths of a degree.

June through August 2026 averaged 74.37 degrees (23.54 degrees Celsius) in the contiguous United States. August alone averaged 75.58 degrees (24.21 degrees Celsius), with average daytime highs reaching a blistering 88.56 degrees (31.42 degrees Celsius).

The heat record extended across the Northern Hemisphere. Globally, summer 2026 tied with 2024 for the hottest on record.

"This summer has really been exceptional. We've seen records that existed for close to 100 years be broken, in the U.S. in particular," Burgess said.

DRIVING FACTORS: CLIMATE CHANGE AND EL NIÑO

Scientists identified two primary drivers behind the extreme heat. Human-caused climate change remains the dominant factor, while the developing El Niño pattern in the Pacific Ocean provides additional temporary warming.

"While El Niño is starting to ramp up the heat, the underlying driver remains our relentless burning of fossil fuels," said Friederike Otto, a climate scientist at Imperial College London. "Climate change makes every El Niño hotter, and until we stop burning coal, oil, and gas these record-shattering months will simply keep on coming."

Burgess noted that El Niño generally adds only one or two tenths of a degree Celsius to global temperatures, with the overwhelming majority of the warming attributed to greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel combustion.

Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist at Berkeley Earth, said the fact that August rather than July set the all-time record—traditionally July is the warmer month—provides clear evidence that human-caused climate change is accelerating.

IMPLICATIONS FOR GLOBAL CLIMATE POLICY

The findings come as governments worldwide continue negotiations on deep emissions cuts to meet international climate goals. The data suggests current policies are insufficient to prevent further temperature increases.

According to Hausfather, it is increasingly likely that 2026 will beat 2024 as the warmest year on record, and almost certain that 2027 will surpass both, potentially reaching as high as 1.8 degrees Celsius (3.2 degrees Fahrenheit) above preindustrial levels on the back of an unprecedentedly strong El Niño event.

"Until humanity stops burning colossal amounts of coal, oil and gas, the pollution this causes will keep baking our planet, and extreme heat will keep smashing all-time records, killing millions and costing trillions, hitting transport and health systems, and pushing up prices for household basics like food," said Simon Stiell, United Nations climate chief.

LONG-TERM TRENDS AND FUTURE PROJECTIONS

Copernicus data extends back to 1940, while NOAA data for the United States goes back to 1895 and global data dates back to 1880. The consistency across these independent datasets strengthens confidence in the observed trends.

Burgess said the impacts are already being felt in daily life. In the United Kingdom, heat waves have led to school closures, hospital overcrowding, road damage, and buckling train lines. These are not abstract future threats but present-day realities, she said.

"We've transitioned from climate being very abstract and perhaps impacting the global South or far away places to climate impacting and disrupting our daily lives," Burgess said.

Scientists project that as temperatures continue to rise, heat waves, storms, floods, and wildfires will become more frequent and more dangerous. Some days may eventually hit the 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 degrees Fahrenheit) threshold above mid-1800s levels, according to Burgess.

The data underscores the urgency of accelerating emissions reductions and adaptation measures. Without significant policy changes, the climate system will continue to operate well outside historical ranges, with profound consequences for ecosystems, economies, and human health worldwide.
