The mission, operated by Axiom Space in partnership with SpaceX and NASA, is the fourth private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS) and represents a historic milestone for international space participation.
The four-person crew includes Commander Peggy Whitson (USA), Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla (India), Mission Specialist Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (Poland), and Mission Specialist Tibor Kapu (Hungary). For India, Poland, and Hungary, Ax-4 marks the first government-sponsored crewed mission to the ISS in over 40 years.

Peggy Whitson, a former NASA astronaut who holds the American record for cumulative time in space, serves as director of human spaceflight at Axiom Space. Her command of Ax-4 brings her back to orbit for a fourth spaceflight, reinforcing the transition from government-only to commercially facilitated human spaceflight.
Shubhanshu Shukla of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) becomes the second Indian national and the first ISRO astronaut to travel to the ISS. India's last crewed spaceflight was Rakesh Sharma's mission aboard the Soviet Soyuz T-11 in April 1984. The Ax-4 crew docked with the ISS approximately 18 days after launch, spending a total of approximately 20 days in space. During their time aboard the station, the crew conducted over 60 scientific experiments and outreach activities spanning multiple disciplines.
The research programme included experiments proposed by national space agencies and research institutions from all four participating countries. Areas of investigation ranged from the effects of microgravity on biological organisms to materials science experiments that leverage the unique conditions of the ISS environment.

Return and Recovery
The Dragon spacecraft Grace undocked from the ISS on 14 July 2025 and splashed down off the coast of California, in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, on 15 July 2025. The Pacific Ocean landing site, rather than the more common Atlantic Ocean recovery zones off the Florida coast, reflected operational considerations for the mission timeline and weather conditions.
The Broader Context of Private Spaceflight
Axiom Mission 4 is part of a growing cadence of private astronaut missions to the ISS, facilitated under NASA's commercial low-Earth orbit development strategy. Axiom Space is also developing its own commercial space station modules, which are planned to be initially attached to the ISS before eventually operating as an independent orbital platform.
The summer of 2025 saw continued high-frequency launch activity from SpaceX, including the subsequent SpaceX Crew-11 NASA mission in August 2025 and the CRS-33 cargo resupply mission later that month. The sustained launch cadence underscores the operational maturity of the Falcon 9 and Dragon systems for both government and commercial crewed missions.
For India, Poland, and Hungary, the Ax-4 mission represents more than a single flight — it is a signal of renewed national commitment to space exploration and a demonstration that the pathway to orbit is now accessible through commercial partnerships, not only through the traditional route of independent launch capability.
