Mandela Washington Fellowship 2025: 620 Young African Leaders Arrive in the United States for Leadership Training at 26 Institutions

Washington, D.C., United States · 23 June 2025

The U.S. Department of State and IREX welcomed the 2025 Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders cohort to the United States on 23 June 2025. Approximately 620 fellows, competitively selected from a pool of over 58,000 applicants, will participate in six-week Leadership Institutes at 26 U.S. educational institutions across 21 states, representing the best and brightest young leaders from across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The 2025 cohort comprises leaders in agriculture, business, civil society, education, energy, healthcare, technology, trade, security, and other fields. Throughout the program, fellows will develop lasting connections with Americans while enhancing their skills through leadership training, academic study, and networking. Fellows also enrich their U.S. host communities by engaging in weekly community service activities throughout the fellowship.

Selection from a Record Applicant Pool

The fellowship, established in 2014, is the flagship program of the U.S. Government's Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI). Since its inception, the program has brought nearly 7,800 young leaders from every country in Sub-Saharan Africa to the United States for academic coursework, leadership training, and networking. The program is administered by IREX, an international nonprofit organisation that specialises in global education and development.

Six-Week Leadership Institutes at 26 U.S. Institutions

Fellows are placed at 26 U.S. colleges and universities across 21 states for intensive six-week Leadership Institutes. The institutes combine academic coursework, leadership training, site visits, and community engagement. Each host institution designs its programme around one of three thematic tracks: Business, Civic Engagement, or Public Management.

The diversity of host institutions—ranging from large research universities to liberal arts colleges—ensures that fellows are exposed to different organisational cultures and approaches to leadership development. Fellows live on campus, participate in daily sessions, and engage with local community leaders, business executives, and civil society organisations.

Professional Development Experiences

Following the six-week Leadership Institutes, up to 85 competitively selected fellows will remain in the United States for an additional four-week Professional Development Experience (PDE). These placements match fellows with private, public, and nonprofit organisations across the country, allowing them to learn from U.S. experts in their fields while also contributing their skills and insights to American organisations.

The PDE component is designed to create mutually beneficial professional relationships. Fellows gain exposure to U.S. organisational practices, management techniques, and sector-specific expertise, while host organisations benefit from the perspectives and knowledge of accomplished African professionals. Many PDE placements have led to ongoing collaborations between fellows' home organisations and their U.S. hosts.

Alumni Network and Reciprocal Exchanges

The fellowship's impact extends well beyond the six-week program. Fellows return to Africa with access to ongoing professional development, networking, and collaboration opportunities through the fellowship's extensive alumni network. With nearly 7,800 alumni across Sub-Saharan Africa, the network represents one of the continent's most concentrated pools of young leadership talent.

Additionally, American professionals may apply to travel to Africa to complete project-based collaborations with fellowship alumni through the Reciprocal Exchange component. This reverse-flow mechanism ensures that the exchange is bidirectional, with U.S. professionals gaining direct exposure to African contexts and challenges.

The Fellowship in Context

The Mandela Washington Fellowship operates within the broader framework of U.S.-Africa engagement on leadership development. The program was launched in 2014 by President Barack Obama as part of YALI, which was initiated in 2010 to support young African leaders in driving economic growth, democratic governance, and peace and security across the continent.

The fellowship's focus on practical leadership skills, combined with its emphasis on cross-cultural exchange and long-term network building, has made it one of the most sought-after programs for young African professionals. The 58,000-plus applicant pool for the 2025 cohort reflects both the program's prestige and the enormous demand for leadership development opportunities among Africa's young population.

With Africa's youth population projected to reach nearly 850 million by 2050, programs like the Mandela Washington Fellowship play a role in building the human capital necessary for the continent's demographic transition. The fellowship's alumni have gone on to found businesses, lead civil society organisations, serve in government, and drive innovation across multiple sectors.
