Europe’s space programme is gearing up for a landmark dual‑satellite launch. The European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Commission’s Copernicus programme will send the Fluorescence Explorer (FLEX) and the Sentinel‑3C satellite aloft on a Vega‑C rocket from the Guiana Space Centre in French Guiana. The liftoff is scheduled for 22:21 Kourou local time on 14 September 2026 (03:21 CEST on 15 September 2026).
Why this launch matters
FLEX is ESA’s first mission designed to measure plant fluorescence from space – a faint glow emitted when vegetation photosynthesises. This will enable early detection of drought stress, disease outbreaks and nutrient deficiencies, improving agricultural forecasts and informing water‑management strategies. Sentinel‑3C’s ocean‑colour and sea‑level data will enhance monitoring of marine ecosystems, coastal erosion and sea‑level rise, feeding into Copernicus services used by policymakers, insurers and disaster‑response agencies.
The combined data streams are expected to feed into the European Climate‑Data Initiative, supporting climate‑model assimilation and the EU’s Green Deal targets for carbon‑neutrality by 2050.
About the missions
- FLEX (Fluorescence Explorer): Developed under ESA’s FutureEO programme, FLEX carries the Fluorescence Imaging Spectrometer (FLORIS) to map plant fluorescence at a 300 m resolution. The mission will generate global vegetation health maps every three days.
- Sentinel‑3C: Part of the Copernicus programme, Sentinel‑3C carries the Ocean and Land Colour Instrument (OLCI), the Synthetic Aperture Radar Altimeter (SRAL) and the Sea‑Surface Temperature Radiometer (SST). It will provide continuity for the Sentinel‑3 data record, essential for long‑term climate monitoring.
