Flash floods that tore through Nepal's Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river corridor on August 26 have killed more than 1,000 people and devastated rural livelihoods, leaving over 1,800 hectares of farmland damaged and thousands of livestock dead. Preliminary assessments by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) indicate crop production losses nearing 7,700 tonnes, with entire communities facing a race against time to recover before the next planting season closes.
Humanitarian Response Begins Within Hours
FAO's emergency teams, including veterinarians, deployed to affected areas within 24 hours of the disaster. The organization has provided veterinary medicines to treat injured animals and is working with Nepal's government to conduct agricultural loss-and-damage assessments using field surveys combined with satellite imagery and remote-sensing technology.
"We need to know not only where the flood went, but what it took with it—and what farmers need to produce again," said FAO Deputy Director-General Beth Bechdol in an interview.
Agriculture Faces Two Clocks
The flood response faces competing timelines. While emergency relief addresses immediate humanitarian needs—safe water, food, shelter and sanitation—the agricultural clock continues ticking. Forty-one bridges have reportedly been destroyed, and damaged roads continue to impede access and constrain the delivery of humanitarian services.
Farmland Buried, Livestock Lost
The affected areas are important livestock-producing regions where thousands of animals have been reported lost. Crops have been buried under mud and sediment, fishponds swept away, and roads, bridges and markets damaged—disrupting the movement of food, animal feed, milk and other agricultural inputs essential for rural economies.
Farmers urgently need seeds while livestock producers require feed and veterinary care. The risk of animal disease has increased following the flooding, making vaccination, treatment and disease surveillance critical priorities alongside immediate recovery efforts.
Recovery Beyond Emergency Aid
Recovery is not simply about replacing seeds. FAO is working to determine which fields can be brought back into production, where soils need restoration, and where drainage and irrigation systems require repair. Satellite imagery shows cropland buried under mud and sediment, alongside erosion and major sediment build-up, presenting challenges for long-term agricultural recovery.
"When a farmer can produce again, a family begins to recover—and a community becomes less dependent on emergency assistance," Bechdol said.
Emergency Veterinary Support Deployed
FAO is providing emergency veterinary support and working to assess the risks of animal disease spreading through affected communities. Livestock represents not only immediate food sources but critical productive assets that families rely on during difficult periods—losing an animal means losing sources of meat, milk, eggs and income.
Long-Term Recovery Challenges
The scale of agricultural losses means recovery will depend on restoring farms, protecting surviving animals, and helping communities return to production before planting windows close. FAO's recovery work includes restoring damaged irrigation systems, distributing seeds and tools before planting seasons end, supplying feed and veterinary services, and helping revive fisheries and local markets.
The immediate actions feed directly into FAO's longer-term recovery work, with the goal of rapidly boosting food production as part of emergency response while simultaneously focusing on opportunities for sustainable agricultural recovery.
